Chain ( - 30 - 30 - 30 - 30 - 30 )
Weave Celtic Knot then tie ends through picot at the beginning of the chain leave enough length on the ball end to make twisted cord and a tassel.
Use the purple shuttle thread, white thread for ball thread.
Chain ( 10 - 10 + 10 - 10 + 10 - 10 + 10 - 10 + 10 - 10 )
Tie like color threads and cut to length for twisted cord, add a bead, then twist & tie cut ends for a tassel.

If you haven't tried one of Lily's twisty cord makers yet, make a note to self... you've got to get one of these wonderful little gadgets!!! http://loopylacer.com/

This butterfly has the rings and beads switched, and three beads instead of just one. I really like the looks of this butterfly.

Purple Celtic Star Butterfly - Copyright 2007 Ruth Perry
Exact same tatting instructions as the blue one, but a slightly different weave of the same Celtic Knot. Hey Lily, how's this for a "challenge" ???
Hugs,
Ruth

Hooray!!! I finally found something to tat with the wonderful thread given to me by a dear friend! I've been saving this thread for more than a year, but it's perfect for butterflies.

String two beads on your thread and wind a yard or two on a shuttle do not cut the thread from the ball or thread holder which will be used as a second shuttle to tat the rings on the bottom wings.

Begin with a small picot by tying an overhand knot in the thread between the shuttle and ball, then tat the first stitch a picot's distance from this knot. Or begin on a paper clip to leave a small loop at the beginning.

Chain ( 35 )
Ring tatted with ball or 2nd shuttle ( 5 - 5 )
Chain ( 40 Bead 50 Bead 40 )
Ring tatted with ball or 2nd shuttle ( 5 - 5 )
Chain ( 35 )

Weave the Celtic Knot, then tie the ends through the picot or loop left at the beginning.

Head: Split Ring ( 4 / 4 )

Tie an overhand knot in the two ends as close to the head as possible, then tie triple overhand knots in each of the two thread ends about 1/2 inch from the ring.

Enjoy!!!

Are you ready to tat lots of stars???

Hugs,
Ruth

I found this awesome little 5" canvas bag at Hobby Lobby on Friday for just under a dollar! OK it was plain, and I have been doing some tatting to add to it. I need to do a LOT more little blue rings for the top left corner, but I think it will look pretty neat when it's finished.

The red stripes are the same as the Celtic bracelet in the Design Journey book, so if you have it try doing them this way, or use any tatted edging that strikes your fancy.
Thought you all might enjoy playing with stars also.

Betsy Ross was a very talented seamstress, and here is how to fold the 5 point star that is on our American flag... http://www.ushistory.org/betsy/flagstar.html
