Purple and yellow butterfly.

I keep thinking about Summertime and warm sunshine with butterflies floating gently over blossoms in a garden of blooms. While reality is: the temperature outside is a balmy 16 degrees.

Soft Shuttles - you'll never guess where I bought these!!!
Slide show from the tatting pattern a day calendar

Thursday, January 25, 2007

This is a Christmas decoration I tatted for a gift for my mom and dad when I was about 12. I don't know what book the pattern was in. If you recognize this email me privately. The pattern in the book did not have the beads. I was a "designer" to some degree even back then. What I remember is that it seemed to me that it took forever to tat this, but then I was a kid and had a lot of other things to do.

Two more variations on the Beeton's Lace Edging from the Tatting pattern a day calendar online
Two rows make a bracelet...
Cross that is easy to tat - no split rings!!! This is a cross that my grandmother taught me to tat when I was little. It's just rings and chains. The only tricky thing about it is remembering when to tat a chain and when to tat a ring.
Beeton's Edging - Corner for tomorrow! Lots of fun with this one.

Today I got to visit with the lovely ladies of the Kansas City tatting group who meet at Unique Expressions, Susan Groh's place on Wednesdays - weather permitting.

I taught them to do my Tatted Nosegay bouquet with Hanging Cluny leaves and lots of small flowers. We had a good time, and Susan's birthday cake was yummy! These ladies are GOOD!

Now, the bad part of meeting with tatters in a shop that sells thread... you guessed it! We all went shopping afterwards. Oh well, I really needed some 185 size thread.

Just a note, for those of you who are looking for a source for the bangle bracelets to mount tatting in for suncatchers, Susan has quite a few of them to sell. Email me if you are interested and don't already have Susan's address.

Demonstrated Tatting today at the Harrisonville Mill Walk Mall in MO. What a fun time we all had. Now understand, this is in FARM country. Only a few of the stores were open for business.

I think I was the only one doing tatting. Susan Groh did bobbin lace, and there was another lace guild doing bobbin lace.

But the spinners!!! I'm sure there were at least 30 spinning wheels with people spinning and plying and drop spindle spinners, and rabbits in cages, and a baby Llama!!! No not a petting zoo, just someone brought in a baby Llama to visit with a friend.

There was also some good ole gospel music, not the recorded kind, but a Live group including a mens quartet, guitar, keyboard, and a string bass!

Top that off with a carry in lunch with chili, cornbread, cucumber salad, and who knows how many different deserts, well - it was a fun day. Quite a few people showed an interest in learning tatting. I gave away a bunch of my usual tatted butterflies. They do this every year on the third Sat of January. Y'all come next time.

Little Daisy Picot Heart

I designed this little heart this morning, thinking about hearts for the
Tatting pattern a day calendar

It was inspired by the beautiful daisy picot hearts that Jon has been tatting. ANchor size 40 thread, about 1.5 inches across.
Ancient Celtic Design reproduced in tatting

Similar design done in tatting. It needs refining, and picots, and probably beads, but I like the pattern!

Riego Narrow Edging - Thanks to Wilma Walker
http://www.antiquepatterns.dreamhosters.com/RiegoRoyalTat.pdf

I added the corner to his beautiful antique edging.

Today I discovered one more reason to love purple! I was tatting some of these antique edgings with an antique looking pink perle cotton thread. It was close to the same color as my fingers, and, while I love the feel of it, some of these edgings are kind of floppy while you work on them.

With the purple Anchor size 40 thread it is easier to see, and has a bit more body. This edging is fairly firm and easy once you get the hang of it.

It's a good one for the calendr, so you might just see the instructions there tomorrow.

Hugs,
Ruth

The end to prophetic tatting!!!

We have ice under sleet, with a "Wintry mix" and are expecting 1 - 3 inches of snow tomorrow.

I think it's time to STOP tatting snowflakes!!!

Completed Tatted Compound snowflake (Snowstar)

It just needs to be blocked now. I usually don't black my tatting, but this is much more "frilly" than most of my tatting.

How many different snowflakes do you see in this piece. There is one in the center, six around the center, with negative image snowflakes and each of these has six small snowflakes. The points look like they are made up of small snowflakes, and the entire piece is one nice six inch diameter snowflake.

All About SNOWFLAKES and SNOW CRYSTALS

I like this piece!

Labels:

Half finished with this row. It goes pretty quickly, that's one reason I like this style of snowflake.

Notice that I have joined the place where I forgot to join during the football game. I just did a join through the picots of both little flakes where they should have been joined in the previous round. That's one of the advantages of designing. If you goof, design around the mistake so it is part of the pattern. Not sneaky, just prudent.

First Spike on the Compound Snowflake

This round continues from the last without a cut and tie. I think this will allow me to correct the missed join of the last round easily. It will be interesting to see how it finishes out. Tatted in DMC Cebelia size 30, it will measure about 6.5 inches in diameter when it is completed. All tatted continuously, and only tie, hide, and cut is when it is finished.

Why I should not tat during the BCS National Championship Bowl Game

The white arrow clearly indicates where I was in this pattern when Ted Ginn Jr. ran 93 yd for a touchdown on the kick off. The too tight tension and smaller picots indicate how much trouble OSU is having stopping the gators.

However it is easy to see the negative images of snowflakes in the centers of the outside row of this compound snowflake. And...

Sorry, half time is over, gotta go now. More later.

Working on the 4th flake of this compound snowflake

I like the fact that the little rings look like snowflakes which make up snowflakes which make a bigger snowflake.
Beginning of the third snowflake of the compound snowflake.

The center flake is the one at the bottom of this photo. The second flake is the top right one. The top left one is the beginning of the third. The ring that joins the 3rd flake to the center is a normal ring, the rest of the inside rings are the split rings. This is tatted continuous around the center flake, and the 6th flake in row two joins to the center flake, the 5th flake, and the 1st flake. It's pretty easy to get lost doing this, but it's been since 1997 or 98 when I tatted this pattern up before, and I remembered it pretty easily. I haven't written the instructions til now.
Snowflake doily I tatted for my sister several years ago

This is a compound snowflake, made up of a simple snowflake in the center surrounded by six simple snowflakes, with a row of spikes tatted around the outside. My niece mounted it on the background for her mom.
Simple snowflake started at the point instead of at the center

Getting ready to tat compound snowflakes made up of several simple snowflakes. This makes it possible to tat a split ring at the point where the end joins to the beginning, and climb out of this flake to begin another.

If you look carefully, you'll see that I tatted the chains with the wrong shuttle in some places. OOPS! It would look better if I did it the right way - duh!!! Not that I can't follow a pattern, but I just wasn't paying attention.

This thread is DMC Cebelia size 30 This little snowflake is about the size of an aero tatting shuttle bobbin, but the picots at the points stick out beyond the bobbin when I place it on the flake.

Tatting surprise... Ribbon broach pattern?

While playing with weaving ribbon through the edging I'm doing on the calendar I discovered how like the support our troops ribbons this looks. Wouldn't it look stunning as a broach? OK, with the tatting finished in some way, not hanging half done.

Hugs!
